# Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT for Work (2026): Which Is Better?

September 30, 2026 · Justin Canetti · 9 min read · Comparisons

## The short answer

**Both are strong, and the honest answer depends on how you work: Claude Cowork is the better fit if you want an agent that plans and executes multi-step knowledge work with deep admin governance, and ChatGPT Business or Enterprise is the better fit if you want company-wide search across your connected apps plus shareable workspace agents.**

**Pick Claude Cowork if:**

- You want to hand over a goal and watch it plan, split into parallel subtasks, and run code and shell commands step by step.
- You need scheduled tasks that run in the cloud even when your laptop is closed.
- Your security team wants SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HIPAA-ready configuration, RBAC, SCIM, and audit logs.

**Pick ChatGPT (Business, Enterprise, or the ChatGPT Work agent) if:**

- You want answers from connected apps like SharePoint, Google Drive, and Slack, with citations that respect each person's permissions.
- You want to build workspace agents once and share them with teammates, then trigger them by schedule, Slack, or API.
- You want a low entry price with Codex and deep research included in the seat.

## First, What Does "ChatGPT for Work" Actually Mean?

If you searched for Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT, one clarification helps. OpenAI does not sell a product literally called "ChatGPT for Work." It sells **ChatGPT Business** (renamed from ChatGPT Team in August 2025), **ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu**, and an agent called **ChatGPT Work** that handles longer tasks across your connected apps and files.

So the real comparison is Claude Cowork on one side and the ChatGPT workspace plans plus the ChatGPT Work agent on the other. That is what this post compares. If you are earlier in the decision, our guide on [AI beyond ChatGPT for business](https://openassistant.us/blog/ai-beyond-chatgpt-for-business) covers the wider field.

## What Is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic mode of Claude for knowledge work outside of code. You give it a goal. It plans, splits the work into parallel subtasks, runs code and shell commands, and shows each step so you can steer. Sessions run in the cloud in an isolated environment.

You can reach it from the desktop app on macOS and Windows, on the web at claude.ai, on mobile, and from a Chrome extension side panel. Local file access, browser use, and computer control need the desktop app open, and local folders are limited to ones you connect. With Dispatch, Pro and Max users can message Claude from a phone in one continuous thread and have it run on their desktop, as long as the desktop is awake with the app open.

Its timeline is short and fast: scheduled tasks in February 2026, general availability in April, web and mobile in July, and Cowork in every conversation in September.

## What Is ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT Business is the team plan, from 2 to 200 paid seats. Standard seats include ChatGPT, the ChatGPT Work agent, Codex, GPTs, Projects, Apps, Company Knowledge, ChatGPT Agent, and Deep Research. Enterprise and Edu add contract pricing and deeper administration.

ChatGPT Work is the agent for longer tasks. It works across connected apps and files and produces documents, spreadsheets, decks, reports, and Sites. On top of that, workspace agents can be built, tested, published, and shared with teammates or the whole workspace, then used in Slack, run on a schedule, or triggered through the API with an admin-issued token.

One caution: sources conflict on whether workspace agents are still a research preview for Business, Enterprise, and Edu or are now generally available. Treat them as new either way.

## Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT Pricing

At the team level, the two are almost identical. Claude Team is $20 per standard seat billed annually or $25 monthly, and ChatGPT Business is $20 per user billed annually or $25 monthly. Both offer a Premium seat with 5x usage at $100 annual or $125 monthly.

The differences are around the edges. For individuals, Claude Pro is $17/month annual or $20 monthly, with Max from $100/month. Claude Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage at API rates. ChatGPT Enterprise pricing is a contract that is not public, with credit-based flexible pricing.

Business plans also cap out: ChatGPT Business covers 2 to 200 paid seats, so larger companies land on Enterprise. Check the current [pricing](https://openassistant.us/pricing) pages of each vendor, since both have changed prices this year.

## Agents and Scheduled Tasks: Does It Run Without You?

Both products can now work while you are away, but in different ways.

- **Claude Cowork:** scheduled tasks run hourly, daily, weekly, weekdays, or on demand, in the cloud even with your laptop closed, on all paid plans. Cloud tasks cannot use local folders. We did not find event or webhook triggers for Cowork.
- **ChatGPT:** a Scheduled page supports one-off, recurring, and monitoring tasks. Active-task limits are 10 on Business and Edu, and 15 on Enterprise. Workspace agents can also be triggered by Slack or the API, which is a real advantage for event-driven work. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare can share scheduled tasks across the workspace.

If you are deciding what to hand to an agent in the first place, see [tasks to automate with AI](https://openassistant.us/blog/tasks-to-automate-with-ai) and [how to use AI at work](https://openassistant.us/blog/how-to-use-ai-at-work).

## Connectors and Company Knowledge

This is where ChatGPT is strongest. Company Knowledge answers questions from connected apps with citations, respecting each user's existing permissions. Named connectors include Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, GitHub, HubSpot, Asana, Microsoft 365, Linear, and Figma, and a secondary source cites more than 60.

Claude Cowork names Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack, and Amplitude, and supports plugins, skills, and MCP servers, with a plugin marketplace and admin controls on Team and Enterprise. It is more extensible for custom tooling, though we did not find a documented equivalent to permission-aware company search with citations.

## Security, Compliance, and Admin Controls

Both are credible for enterprise, and neither trains on business data by default. Anthropic lists SOC 2 Type I and II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 42001, and a HIPAA-ready configuration with a BAA. Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, RBAC, audit logs, a Compliance API, and custom retention, and Cowork has usage analytics and OpenTelemetry.

OpenAI's Enterprise tier adds SCIM, RBAC with custom roles, a Compliance API, immutable Compliance Logs, and data residency in regions including the US, Europe, UK, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, India, and the UAE. Business includes SAML SSO, MFA, and spend controls. SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 are cited, though we did not see the full certificate list.

Whichever you choose, run it through a checklist like [how to know if an AI tool is safe](https://openassistant.us/blog/how-to-know-if-an-ai-tool-is-safe), and read the vendor's [trust](https://openassistant.us/trust) documentation for your own requirements.

## Team Collaboration and Sharing

ChatGPT is more collaborative today. Projects can be shared inside a Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace, and workspace agents can be published to teammates. Group chats exist for consumer plans but were not launched for Business.

Claude Cowork sessions themselves cannot be shared, only artifacts, though that may change. Claude Tag, in beta for Team and Enterprise in Slack, puts one Claude in each channel that serves everyone, remembers channel context, and can schedule follow-ups. Admins scope tools, data, and spend per channel.

Neither product has its own phone number or email identity that we could find. Both act as the user through connected accounts. ## Which Is Better for Work? By Type of User

- **Analyst or operator:** Cowork if you want it to plan and execute a multi-step job with visible steps. ChatGPT if your work starts with finding answers across company documents.
- **Developer:** both include coding tooling. Codex is included in ChatGPT seats, and Claude Code sits alongside Cowork.
- **IT admin:** both cover SSO, SCIM, RBAC, and audit needs on Enterprise. Cowork adds ISO 42001 and OpenTelemetry. ChatGPT adds broad data residency options.
- **Small team:** both are $20 to $25 per seat. Pick ChatGPT Business if shared agents and Projects matter, and Claude Team if agentic task execution and scheduled cloud tasks matter.

## How They Differ in One Line

Claude Cowork is an agent that does the work with governance built in, and ChatGPT is a workspace that knows your company's apps and lets you share agents. Many teams will reasonably trial both.
