Justin CanettiJustin Canetti8 min read
Side by side spec cards for Instinct and Grok Bot comparing access, where you use each, who each acts as, and price.

The short answer

Short answer: Instinct is a text-first assistant that runs errands and makes calls for you; Grok Bot is a desktop-and-mobile-app agent on a persistent cloud VM that works inside your own accounts.

  • Pick Instinct if you want a zero-install assistant you text, that can call businesses, book things, and message you first when something needs action.
  • Pick Grok Bot if you already have SuperGrok Heavy or a Cursor plan, want parallel bots, scheduled routines, and connectors to work tools like Gmail, Outlook, Salesforce, and Jira, and are comfortable with an agent acting as you.

Both are early and gated. Instinct is invite-only and free during its beta; Grok Bot is in beta behind a paid plan, with a price you should confirm on x.ai.

What Is Instinct?

Instinct is a personal AI assistant from Spear Street Technology, Inc., founded in 2025 by Noah Shinn, formerly of Sierra. TechCrunch reported a $250M Series B on August 26, 2026 and a $1B Series C on September 28. User count and revenue are undisclosed.

It follows up on dropped threads, arranges rides, books services, trips, groceries, and concert tickets, and cancels subscriptions. It is proactive and can message you first, for example about a flight check-in. You start by texting it. TechCrunch says it uses its own phone number and computer.

What Is Grok Bot?

Grok Bot is xAI's agent product, in beta since August 11, 2026. It is a persistent named agent on an account-scoped cloud VM, and it keeps running when your laptop is closed. It is separate from @grok on X, Grok Tasks, and the Grok Business and Enterprise chat plans.

Its strengths are real-time X and web search, a persistent VM that handles legacy tools with no API, parallel bots that coordinate in group chat, and learning skills from a browser demonstration. It is bundled with all paid Cursor plans. To place it among other agents, see AI beyond ChatGPT for business.

Is Instinct Free? Grok Bot Pricing and Access

Instinct is free during its invite-only private beta. It is compute-limited, so you join a waitlist or get an invite from a member. No pricing is published, and its terms say fees may be required later. We do not repeat unconfirmed price rumors.

Grok Bot is reached through SuperGrok Heavy or any paid Cursor plan, per xAI's docs. Usage resets weekly. Reported prices conflict across sources, so confirm the current figure on x.ai.

In short: Instinct costs nothing today but needs an invite, while Grok Bot needs a paid plan you may already have. For price context across assistants, see best AI personal assistants in 2026 or the OpenAssistant pricing page.

Head to Head: What Each Agent Can Actually Do

  • Instinct acts for you in the world. It makes phone calls through a concierge feature, sends emails on your behalf, and per secondary reads of its terms is authorized to enter binding commitments and transactions for you. A Vault stores third-party logins.
  • Grok Bot acts as you in your apps. It uses connectors (Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Salesforce, Slack, Notion, GitHub, Jira) and requires approval for sending, publishing, buying, and deleting. It stops for passwords, 2FA, and payment entry.
  • Automation: Grok Bot has routines (50 per bot, last 20 runs kept) triggered on a schedule or by events such as Slack and GitHub. We did not find a documented workflow builder for Instinct.

Both are strongest on individual work. If you want ideas for what to hand off, see tasks to automate with AI and how to use AI at work.

Does Grok Bot Have Its Own Phone Number? Identity and Channels

Instinct meets you in text and calls, so there is nothing to install. Grok Bot has desktop apps and iOS and Android apps, and a third-party review found no email, Slack, Telegram, or phone channel to reach it. Slack and GitHub can trigger routines, but that is different from chatting with it there.

On identity, Instinct reportedly has its own phone number and computer, and, per TechCrunch, launched its own email addresses in September 2026. For Grok Bot, no phone number or email of its own is documented, and phone or voice calls are not documented. Its bots have names, but that is not an external identity.

If the agent needs to speak to strangers under its own name, Instinct is closer to that. If you want everything sent as you, from your accounts, Grok Bot fits.

Head to Head: Privacy, Security, and Trust

Instinct's terms (updated August 26, 2026) require users to be 18 or older, train on inputs by default with an opt-out at app.instinct.com/settings (Vault content exempt), cap liability at $100 or six months of fees, and require arbitration. TechCrunch noted privacy criticism over overly generous permissions. No SOC 2, SSO, or admin controls were found on its site.

For Grok Bot, xAI's Grok Business and Enterprise plans say customer data is never used for training and add SSO, SCIM, audit, and security controls. A secondary source reports SOC 2 Type II and GDPR, with ISO 27001 and 42001 in progress. Consumer terms for Grok Bot are worth confirming on x.ai. A documented caveat: all bots share one VM and are not separate security boundaries.

Who Each Is Best For

  • Instinct is best for individuals who want an assistant to text, with real calls and bookings, proactive follow-up, and no install.
  • Grok Bot is best for developers and power users, especially Cursor and SuperGrok Heavy subscribers, and anyone whose work runs through tools that have no API.
  • For teams, Grok Bot's enterprise story is stronger on paper, while Instinct appears single-user. See Grok Bot alternatives for work and Instinct alternatives for work, or read Instinct vs. Cue.

How They Differ in One Line

Instinct is an assistant you text that acts in the world under its own phone number; Grok Bot is a cloud VM agent that acts as you inside your own accounts. For other pairings, see Grok Bot vs. Cue and Claude Cowork vs. Grok Bot.
